A Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a specialist in newborn breastfeeding problems. I have been an IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant) as well as a Physician Assistant and have worked my whole career (30+ years) with babies. I can provide you with breastfeeding problem solving as well as newborn behavior information. Working together whether for a prenatal consultation or a postpartum lactation consultation you will feel supported and more confident in your breastfeeding journey. > Read more about my background and training.

BREASTFEEDING PREPARATION

PRENATAL LACTATION CONSULTATIONS

Start Breastfeeding with Confidence—Before Your Baby Arrives

Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. A prenatal breastfeeding consultation gives you the tools and confidence to start off strong—especially if you’ve struggled with breastfeeding before.

During our visit (in person or via telehealth), we’ll talk through your concerns, past experiences, and what to expect in the first critical days and weeks. I’ll walk you through what’s normal, what to watch for, and how to avoid common pitfalls. You’ll leave with a personalized breastfeeding care plan, packed with clear, practical steps to help you feel ready.

Having an experienced IBCLC in your corner before your baby arrives means less stress, more confidence, and a smoother start to breastfeeding.

💰 Cost: Home visit $320 | Office visit $250
(Find out how The Lactation Network or Wildflower may cover your visit!)

BREASTFEEDING HELP

AFTER BABY IS BORN: Working with a Lactation Consultant

This home or clinic lactation consultant visit is a great fit for any new family in the overwhelming first few weeks with a new baby.  Helping you learn how your baby is communicating their feeding needs with you and how to successfully establish this breastfeeding relationship is our specialty. Whether you are experiencing a problem or just trying to figure out the basics of breastfeeding we are here for you.

Home Visit Lactation Consultation -$320

Office Visit Lactation Consultation - $250
(Office visits take place at 1131 West Street, Bldg 1, Southington, CT)

Follow-Up Home Visits - $250
Follow-Up Office Visits - $180
We will discuss progress and how things are going. We will observe a feeding and reassess and formulate any change to plan that is needed.

Weight Check - $35
It is often very helpful to have weight checks to assess progress and boost confidence. This is a short visit where we weigh baby and discuss briefly our findings and discuss any change to plan based on baby’s weight.

Flange Fitting - $95.00

During the lactation consultation we will:

  • 1 Take a thorough health history for mom and baby
  • 2 Help with positioning & latch as needed, and answer your questions as needed.
  • 3 Do a pre/post feed weight - our scale can assess breastmilk intake during the feeding
  • 4 Do an oral exam assessing for anatomical issues that can affect breastfeeding
  • 5 Provide breastfeeding education and basic management advice
  • 6 Develop a concrete plan of care based our findings that we email to you
  • 7 Send a consultation report to your pediatrician and obstetrician
  • 8 Be available for email or phone follow-up after the visit
I look forward to supporting your breastfeeding journey!

Insurance and Payment Options

We are happy to now be able to see BC/BS, United Health Care and CIGNA clients and receive payment via insurance.  For Connecticare, Husky, Tricare we are cash pay.  We accept credit cards, checks and cash. HSA or FSA cards are accepted. We are able to submit to Connecticare on your behalf but NOT Husky or Tricare.  We provide some home visits depending on our ability based on distance.  Reach out to us and we can discuss your options.   There is an additional charge of $25.00 for every 15 miles from our home base.

We will never turn a family away who desires lactation care - payment plans available if necessary. If you are a military family please ask for our military discount.

AETNA:
We are in network with Aetna.

On September 1, 2024, Aetna changed its longstanding policy from covering 6 lactation visits to covering 6 lactation codes. This means that, as an Aetna-covered patient, you will now only be covered for 3 lactation visits per child, not 6. Aetna’s reimbursement for a single code barely covers half the cost of a lactation appointment, which is why all lactation consultants contracted with Aetna have historically billed for 2 codes per visit.

This policy change is infuriating. We, along with dozens of lactation consultants nationwide, have sent letters to Aetna explaining how this negatively impacts access to affordable lactation support for families. Unfortunately, Aetna has refused to revert to their original policy.

Going forward:

  1. Please know that Lactation Services of Southington will do everything we can to provide you with the lactation support you need and deserve.

Lactation Services of Southington New Aetna Policy (Effective 10/14/24)

  • If you have had more than 3 appointments with our lactation consultants prior to 10/14/24, you will not be billed for any visits beyond the first 3. Lactation Services of Southington will absorb the cost of those additional appointments.
  • For any future appointments beyond the first 3, you will need to pay our cash rate. If this rate is not within your family’s budget, please reach out to discuss your options.
  • Aetna no longer covers virtual appointments, so all visits must take place either in our clinic or at your home.
  • We will continue to bill Aetna for all appointments. If we happen to receive payment for any visits beyond the first 3, we will refund that amount directly to you. *If the reimbursement exceeds the amount you paid for the appointment, you will be refunded up to the amount you paid.

Prior to our appointment we ask that you call Aetna to confirm the coverage you are have for lactation care.

CONNECTICARE:
Connecticare also usually covers at least 1 visit. However, you are still responsible for the fees at the time of the visit but we are happy to submit your bill to them for you for a small fee.

ALL OTHER INSURANCES:

We now partner with The Lactation Network and visits are often covered in full for UHC, BCBS.  Click here to see if your visits can be covered in full.

We partner with Wildflower Health to cover our CIGNA clients.  Click here to check your coverage.

While the Affordable Health Care Act states that coverage for lactation care in or out of network is the law unfortunately it is not an easy task for families. Calling to confirm and check with your insurance carrier about their coverage is recommended. As well this link will take you to the National Women’s Law Center and their toolkit which has very helpful information in speaking with your insurance company.

We recommend you call your insurance company to discuss your coverage and your ability to work with us for your lactation care.  If your insurance company tells you that we are not in network (which is because they don’t allow us to join their network) please request a “gap exception” or an expedited “in for out” request. Also, please ask them to expedite this request so that you can have lactation care quickly.
