A Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a specialist in newborn breastfeeding problems. I have been an IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant) as well as a Physician Assistant and have worked my whole career (30+ years) with babies. I can provide you with breastfeeding problem solving as well as newborn behavior information. Working together whether for a prenatal consultation or a postpartum lactation consultation you will feel supported and more confident in your breastfeeding journey. > Read more about my background and training.

BREASTFEEDING PREPARATION

PRENATAL LACTATION CONSULTATIONS

My prenatal breastfeeding consultations can take place via telehealth, or at my office.  A breastfeeding consultation during pregnancy is ideal for those who want a healthy start to breastfeeding, including clients who have had breastfeeding challenges with a previous child. Often discussing your experience and then outlining the important steps to getting off to a great start is just what you need. Discussing what is important to focus on in the first few days with your newborn and what to watch for in the first week and beyond can provide you with the confidence and concrete information to be successful. We develop a detailed breastfeeding care plan with very concrete tips for you at the end of the visit. As well, establishing a relationship with me as your Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) prior to your little one's birth can allow you to feel prepared and ready to conquer this the second time around.  COST:  Home visit $320, or office visit $250. (See how The Lactation Network can cover your visits for you)

BREASTFEEDING HELP

AFTER BABY IS BORN: Working with a Lactation Consultant

This home or clinic lactation consultant visit is a great fit for any new family in the overwhelming first few weeks with a new baby.  Helping you learn how your baby is communicating their feeding needs with you and how to successfully establish this breastfeeding relationship is our specialty. Whether you are experiencing a problem or just trying to figure out the basics of breastfeeding we are here for you.

Home Visit Lactation Consultation -$320

Office Visit Lactation Consultation - $250
(Office visits take place at 1131 West Street, Bldg 1, Southington, CT)

Follow-Up Home Visits - $250
Follow-Up Office Visits - $180
We will discuss progress and how things are going. We will observe a feeding and reassess and formulate any change to plan that is needed.

Weight Check - $35
It is often very helpful to have weight checks to assess progress and boost confidence. This is a short visit where we weigh baby and discuss briefly our findings and discuss any change to plan based on baby’s weight.

Flange Fitting - $95.00

During the lactation consultation we will:

  • 1 Take a thorough health history for mom and baby
  • 2 Help with positioning & latch as needed, and answer your questions as needed.
  • 3 Do a pre/post feed weight - our scale can assess breastmilk intake during the feeding
  • 4 Do an oral exam assessing for anatomical issues that can affect breastfeeding
  • 5 Provide breastfeeding education and basic management advice
  • 6 Develop a concrete plan of care based our findings that we email to you
  • 7 Send a consultation report to your pediatrician and obstetrician
  • 8 Be available for email or phone follow-up after the visit
I look forward to supporting your breastfeeding journey!

Insurance and Payment Options

For all clients other than Aetna we are fee for service providers. Payment is taken at the time of the visit. We accept credit cards, checks and cash. HSA or FSA cards are accepted. We will submit your claim to your insurance provider for you.

Whether you would like a home visit or you would like to come to our office we can accommodate you. There is an additional charge of $25.00 for every 15 miles from our home base.

We will never turn a family away who desires lactation care - payment plans available if necessary. If you are a military family please ask for our military discount.

AETNA:
We are in network with Aetna. Aetna typically covers up to 6 visits at no charge. Prior to our appointment we ask that you call Aetna to confirm the coverage you are have for lactation care. As long as coverage is confirmed there is no exchange of fees for the services for Aetna clients.

CONNECTICARE:
Connecticare also covers at least 1 visit. However, you are still responsible for the fees at the time of the visit but we are happy to submit your bill to them for you for a small fee.

ALL OTHER INSURANCES:
This includes BC/BS, United Heath Care, Cigna, and others. While the Affordable Health Care Act states that coverage for lactation care in or out of network is the law unfortunately it is not an easy task for families. Calling to confirm and check with your insurance carrier about their coverage is recommended. If your insurance company tells you that we are not in network (which is because they don’t allow us to join their network) please request a “gap exception” or an expedited “in for out” request. Also, please ask them to expedite this request so that you can have lactation care quickly. As well this link will take you to the National Women’s Law Center and their toolkit which has very helpful information in speaking with your insurance company.
